CENTRO DE CIENCIAS DO MAR DO ALGARVE
Portugal
The Algarve Marine Science Centre, also known by its acronym CCMAR, is one of the leading marine science research centers in Portugal and is widely recognized for the excellence of its research at European level. Its capacity is based on a multidisciplinary team including marine biology, ecology, oceanography, environmental sciences, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture. Located in the south of Portugal, CCMAR is an independent, non-profit research organization, part of the University of the Algarve system, with public utility status.
We are an institution that leads the way in ocean research, developing science and technology to respond to major challenges facing society. The ocean is our future. The ocean covers 70% of our planet, is home to an enormous diversity of life and ecosystems and is fundamental to regulating the climate and the global carbon cycle. Although the ocean is essential for life on Earth, we still don't know exactly how it works or how it reacts to changes and threats. If the ocean is our focus, science is our foundation.
With a multidisciplinary strategy and following Open Science policies, our science contributes to Society, Education, Collaboration and Industry, focusing on three essential pillars: Knowing, Protecting and Exploring the Ocean. Some of our indicators: 335 members (60% women and 40% men); 18 research groups; 337 scientific articles; 88 scientific projects; 19 European Union projects; 161 researchers; 89 PhD students; 5400 students involved in school activities; 2559 followers on Instagram, 10799 on Facebook and 16301 on LinkedIn; 4 spinoffs and 4 advanced courses.
